Democracy in Action

Democracy in Action

In 2016 there was a small majority for leave but no plan how to make that happen. 3.5 years later, there is no agreement on how that can be achieved which would secure our peace and prosperity. We have a stalemate between two options; Boris' Deal - a hard Brexit - or staying in the EU and reforming it from within.

Debate - an essential part of our Democracy

Democracy is a continuous process, governance by the people. Usually, this is through our elected representatives, MPs who make decisions and debate, amend and pass legislation. But a referendum process was chosen to determine our membership of the EU.

People's Vote March

A second referendum

Given the inability of Parliament to agree on a way forward, and that it was the people voted in 2016, my view is that the electorate should be asked again, via a referendum, to choose the Next Step for the UK; between the two options currently available:

A)Brexit under Boris' terms, or

B) the deal we already have to Remain

So Why Propose An Election

Our preference is for a second referendum but Parliament on 17 occasions has not supported this due to the Labour Party Leadership not backing a People's Vote. Our priority is to stop a damaging Brexit so to break the deadlock in Parliament we have put forward a proposal for an Election on 9th December. This shows the EU that the UK Parliament is serious about using an extension to resolve the impasse. If we can't have a People's Vote then the People can decide on the next step through a General Election.

Keep Carlisle Thriving

My view is we can best keep Carlisle thriving and protect our kids future by keeping the deal we already have, remaining in the EU. This is why I went to London last weekend to make the case to let us all decide on the Next Step.

Democracy in Action

Good Law is made through reviewing and revisiting decisions until the best way forward is found. This is what happens in Parliament through committee stages and scrutinising bills in both houses of Parliament, allowing the People to choose again simply mirrors that process.

This is Democracy in Action.
